Inspiring the Next Generation in Anatomy

A Keynote at the Anatomical Society Winter Meeting 2025
Dr. Bernadette de Bakker was honored to serve as keynote speaker at the Anatomical Society Winter Meeting 2025, hosted by Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, United Kingdom, at the invitation of Tom O’Mahoney.
This conference was particularly meaningful, as she attended together with her eldest daughter, Josien (9). From the moment they arrived, the organizing team created a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, even preparing a personalized conference badge for Josien.
Throughout the meeting, Josien explored exhibition stands, interacted with anatomical models, and experimented with digital anatomy platforms from leading educational providers. She also attended her mother’s keynote lecture and joined the evening gala dinner, making the event a memorable mother–daughter experience.
For Dr. de Bakker, this moment reflected something larger: science is not only about data and publications, but also about inspiration. Encouraging curiosity in the next generation — especially girls in STEM — remains deeply important. Creating open, welcoming scientific spaces where young people feel included is an investment in the future of anatomy and biomedical research.
