Advancing Forensic Imaging with Micro-CT

The ISFRI 2025 meeting in Fukui, Japan, gathered delegates from more than 30 countries for several days of scientific exchange, case presentations, and discussions on the latest technologies shaping forensic radiology and imaging.

We started with honorary lectures by Dr. Seiji Shiotani (Seirei Fuji Hospital), Dr. Suguru Torimitsu (The University of Tokyo), and Dr. Soichiro Kawabe (Fukui Prefectural University). Their insights, spanning radiology, forensic medicine, and paleontological research, set the tone for a meeting that combined rigorous science with cultural discovery. Participants also enjoyed an excursion to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, home to more than 40 life-sized skeletons — including unique finds such as the Fukuiraptor — followed by a sparkling sake tasting 😉

In the scientific sessions, 3D Human Development team was well represented: both Daniel Docter and Melanie Timmerman presented their research on the application of Micro-CT imaging in forensics. Their work demonstrated how high-resolution 3D imaging can enhance case analysis, support best practices, and open new avenues for forensic investigation.

Beyond the science, participants enjoyed Japanese traditions at the gala dinner, including the ceremonial kagami-biraki — the ritual opening of a sake barrel — by Henri and Bernadette de Bakker and other board and honorary members and warm exchanges that carried late into the night.

ISFRI 2025 closed with the Patricia Flach Award presented to Mohammad Alshirawi and the handover of leadership to the new Chair, Summer Decker.

We are proud of Daniel and Melanie’s contributions and look forward to continuing to drive innovation in forensic imaging.
